Alphabetizing Your Favorites in Windows XP

Windows XP is a powerful operating system, but there are some organization options hidden from you if you don't know where to dig. This method for alphabetizing your Favorites list relies on editing the Registry – a database where Windows stores some lower-level operating system information.

Registry editing can be used for many powerful tweaks; whenever you use it you should create a backup of your current registry, in case anything goes wrong.

1. Open up the Windows Registry Editor.

Click Start and then Run. At the prompt, enter the phrase ‘regedit’ and then press
enter, or click OK.

2. Navigate to the favorites folder

Your Registry Editor is a lot like browsing files in Explorer. On the left side, we’re going to double-click a series of folders, each inside the previous one.

* HKEY_CURRENT_USER
* Software
* Microsoft
* Windows
* CurrentVersion
* Explorer
* MenuOrder
* Favorites

3. Delete the Favorites folder

Right click on the folder and select Delete from the menu that pops up. Exit your Registry Editor.

4. Restart your computer
